ORAL PIERCING AFTERCARE

  1. THINK: DO NOT touch new piercing with dirty hands as this can lead to an infection through cross contamination. WASH your hands with an anti-bacterial soap before touching the piercing or the area around the piercing.

  2. CLEANSERS: Use only an alcohol free mouth rinse or Glyoxide. Both can be found at your local drug store.

  3. CLEANING: Rinse after each meal and before you go to bed at night. If you are a smoker, rinse more frequently. Do not over rinse as this may cause the area around your piercing to dry out. If this happens, reduce the number of times you are rinsing.

  4. HEALING TIME: The average healing time is approximately 3 to 5 weeks; consult your piercer for specific piercings. Healing time varies with each individual. You can assist the healing time by maintaining a well balanced diet and taking vitamin-mineral supplements. Zinc can be taken with meals by following the directions on the box. PLEASE NOTE: DRINKING ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR AT LEAST 48 HOURS AFTER A NEW PIERCING

  5. SWELLING: Swelling can last 5 to 7 days and is completely normal. Stay away from hot, spicy and salty foods and use an anti-inflammatory over the counter medication like Ibuprofen. Sucking on crushed ice for the first 24 to 48 hours can be helpful but don ot suck on ice too hard as this can promote bleeding. If the piercing starts to bleed, discontinue using the ice.

  6. CHANGING JEWELRY: You should wait 45 days before changing your jewelry. When you replace your jewelry, make sure you use good quality jewelry. If you are uncertain as to what kind of jewelry to use, consult your piercer by calling 804-524-0112.
