BODY PIERCING AFTERCARE
- THINK: DO NOT touch new piercing with dirty hands as this can lead to an infection through cross contamination. WASH your hands with an anti-bacterial soap before touching the piercing or the area around the piercing.
- CLEANSERS: Use a non-deorderant/anti-bacterial soap such as liquid Dial. Bactine can be used in addition to soap cleaning. Bactine can be used directly after or between showered cleanings. If skin is sensitive, Bactine may be diluted with water at a ratio of 50% Bactine and 50% water. Douse a Q-tip or cotton ball and apply to piercing.
- CLEANING: Clean fresh piercings 3 to 4 times daily. Let warm water soften crust on jewelry. Lather hands and remove any secretions that have built up on the edges of the piercing or ring itself. The buildup can cause irritation if turned inside of the piercing. Secretion is normal and will continue throughout the healing process. Turn soap in and out of the piercing 2 or 3 times. Rinse piercing using the same process. When ring does not move quite as freely, the area is free of soap.
- HEALING TIME: The average healing time is approximately 3 weeks; consult your piercer for specific piercings. Healing time varies with each individual. You can assist the healing time by maintaining a well balanced diet and taking vitamin-mineral supplements.
- AVOIDING INFECTIONS: Again, do not touch your piercings with dirty hands! Avoid tight or restrictive clothing, especially with navel piercings. Avoid pools, hot tubs, oceans and lakes as they contain bacteria which can get into your piercings. If you feel you have an infection, please contact your primary care giver to get medical advice or come into the shop and speak with your piercer.
- CHANGING JEWELRY: You should wait 45 days before changing your jewelry. When you replace your jewelry, make sure you use good quality jewelry. If you are uncertain as to what kind of jewelry to use, consult your piercer by calling 804-524-0112.
